FIRST GRADE FIGURES

After a discussion on the differences and similarities between portraits and figures, first grade students created these great figure drawings. Completed drawings were cut out and glued to white construction paper. A repeating pattern was then added to the background with crayon. First grade parents be sure and check out the entire figure drawing exhibit on "ARTSONIA"

FOURTH GRADE SELF PORTRAITS AND TYPOGRAPHY

We have a student teacher in the art room this fall. Marissa Siegel is joining us from the University of Iowa (GO HAWKS!). It has been great to have an extra adult in the room this fall.

Recently Mrs. Siegel has been working with the fourth graders on a typography unit. Classes looked at typography and how it can be used in art. Students then used a photograph and along with a little help from the light box their pictures were changed to a simple line drawing.

Text was added from magazines and newspapers. Spaces were filled with hand printed descriptive words relating to each students interests and personal characteristics. This unit was very challenging for the fourth graders but they were able to produce some unusual and interesting pieces. ENJOY!

WONDERFUL WEAVING

I love weaving with my student. There are so many possibilities and all the kids really love it. This year the younger classes have been working on various paper weaving techniques and the older students have been experimenting with yarn. Here are a few samples.

IN LIKE A LION

I can't believe its March already! To illustrate the phrase "March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb" the Kindergarten classes made these very expressive Lion Paintings with tempera paint. I actually tweeked this idea from one shared by fellow blogger, John Post. Before beginning their paintings students created some quick thumb nail sketches to practice their drawing skills. Final drawings were complete on brown construction paper and we used tempera paint in neutral colors to add color to their drawings.

BLUE DOG AND A FEW CATS

"60 Minutes" did this great video on Louisiana artist, George Rodrigue and the subject of many of his paintings, Blue Dog.

After introducing fourth graders to the "Blue Dog", we set out to create our own versions of man's best friend. Many of the students used the original blue dog to help with the development of their painting. But, I was really happy to see some of the kids take off in different directions and use either family pets or favorite dog breeds as the idea for their piece. We even had a few cat lovers in the group and ended up with a few brightly colored felines. Which I was totally fine with !!
