FOURTH GRADE SELF PORTRAITS

The work of American Pop artist, Roy Lichtenstein, served as inspiration for fourth grade self-portraits. Lichtenstein, who rose to popularity during the 1960's was probably best known for his large comic-strip like paintings.

For this project students used photographs taken in class to create a line drawing of themselves. Then after discussing Lichtenstein and characteristics of Pop Art, such as bright colors, bold black outlines and ben day dots the students set to work finishing their portraits.

Do you see anyone you recognize ????

BACK TO SCHOOL

The third and fourth grade classes at Francis Marion are off to a great start this fall. They were excited to be back at school and so was I. One of my struggles at the beginning of each new year is remembering the names of all of my students. To help me with the task I pulled some tried and true lessons from my bag of tricks.

Once Emerged From The Grey Of Night
by
Paul Klee

We looked at the work of artist Paul Klee, in particular a picture poem titled "Once Emerged From The Grey Of Night". In this painting Klee placed letters from a poem inside square shapes, creating spaces to fill with color. For their compositions, instead of a poem students used their names and an interesting fact about themselves. The results are spectacular!

Fourth Grade

Students used permanent markers on aluminum foil to create these eye catching drawings using their names as the subject of the composition. Well done fourth grade.

FIRST GRADE FIGURES

After a discussion on the differences and similarities between portraits and figures, first grade students created these great figure drawings. Completed drawings were cut out and glued to white construction paper. A repeating pattern was then added to the background with crayon. First grade parents be sure and check out the entire figure drawing exhibit on "ARTSONIA"

FOURTH GRADE SELF PORTRAITS AND TYPOGRAPHY

We have a student teacher in the art room this fall. Marissa Siegel is joining us from the University of Iowa (GO HAWKS!). It has been great to have an extra adult in the room this fall.

Recently Mrs. Siegel has been working with the fourth graders on a typography unit. Classes looked at typography and how it can be used in art. Students then used a photograph and along with a little help from the light box their pictures were changed to a simple line drawing.

Text was added from magazines and newspapers. Spaces were filled with hand printed descriptive words relating to each students interests and personal characteristics. This unit was very challenging for the fourth graders but they were able to produce some unusual and interesting pieces. ENJOY!

WONDERFUL WEAVING

I love weaving with my student. There are so many possibilities and all the kids really love it. This year the younger classes have been working on various paper weaving techniques and the older students have been experimenting with yarn. Here are a few samples.
